The most important features usually include weather anomalies, yield trend, input cost inflation, futures and cash prices, and basis. But the best features are often decision-specific. If you are forecasting margin pressure, acreage rent and cost structure may matter as much as weather.
How do we turn a forecast into an actionable recommendation?
Define thresholds tied to farm economics, such as break-even margin, uncertainty bands, or cost-to-revenue ratios. Then map each threshold to a specific action: review hedging, delay a purchase, revisit insurance, or reassess cash flow. Users trust the system more when the recommendation is tied to a clear rationale and a specific trigger.
Should we use weather forecasts or only observed weather?
Use both, but be explicit about the difference. Observed weather is useful for historical trend and feature stability, while weather forecasts can improve near-term planning if you manage their uncertainty separately. Never mix forecasted values into historical training data without preserving what was known at prediction time.
